Dave is a housedad. He has a young son, Sam, who was born in mid-2004, and a little daughter, Daisy, born late 2007. His partner's name is Liz. We don't know much else about him except that he likes getting plenty of advice from Ed. (Or at least he puts up with it...)
Ed is also a housedad. He's in his early(ish) thirties and has three children. He writes to Dave about his adventures in the world of full-time parenting. He is fictional but he has plenty of fictional friends to keep him company:
| Sarah: | Ed's wife. She works in the marketing department of a Large Banking Organisation (LBO). She enjoys it there and likes coming home to find her tea made. |
| Fraser: | Their first child, born mid-2000. He's at primary school. |
| Lewis: | Son number two, born early 2002. |
| Marie: | That awkward third child, born late 2004. She likes pink. |
| Scary Karen: | A single mum that Ed knows from parent and toddler group. She's scary. She's frequently to be found with her four friends Bess, Tess, Jess and Cress. (These are not their real fictional names but Ed has forgotten those). |
| Trevor: | Karen's secret admirer and the bouncer at her parent and toddler group. He used to be in the army and is built like a truck. |
| Julia: | a.k.a. Super~Mum. Julia has four children under the age of ten whom she home-schools. She lives on Ed's street. She makes everyone she meets feel like a pathetic excuse for a parent. |
| The GPD: | a.k.a. The GrandParent of Doom; Eleanor. Julia's mum. She tells everyone she meets that they're a pathetic excuse for a parent. |
| Steve: | a.k.a. The Clueless Manager, Useless Dad. Sarah's boss. He's a bit useless. He has two children: a daughter who's nursery age and a baby son. They probably have names like Ophelia and Josquin. Made redundant autumn 2007. |
| Scott: | Steve's former manager. Unpleasant. |
| Deborah: | Steve's wife. After years of doing all the childcare on her own, she's begun rediscovering herself. This means Steve sometimes gets left looking after his kids. He's not happy. Neither are they. |
| Rob: | Ed's former minion at LBO and best friend. He's now in charge of a few things himself. He's going to be a dad in early 2008. He's panicking. (Update: It's a boy! His name's Luke.) |
| Mike: | a.k.a. The Minister. Mike is in charge of the church Ed attends. He's gruff, wise, pragmatic and an unerring shot. His children have grown up and left home. |
| Catriona: | Ed's sister-in-law. Lovely but a little scary. Significantly older than Sarah. |
| Chris: | Catriona's husband. Irritating but not actually evil (or scary). |
| Lisa: | Ed's niece. Seventeen, pretty, polite, talented, clever and very scary. |
| Ned: | Ed's nephew. Fourteen, smelly, taciturn, enigmatic and scary on a dark night. |
